Forbes has projected that more than 250 million smart vehicles as well as 10 million self-driving cars will be on the road by 2020.<\/p>\n<p>But a complete transformation to fully automated trucks is likely to be slow.\u00a0 Closer than total autonomy is the possibility of trucks driving themselves part of the time, with assistance from humans, like automated guided vehicles. \u2018Platooning\u2019 technology, for example, involves trucks owned by a single company synchronising their braking on motorways to enable them to drive far closer together than would normally be safe.
